Theology and Academic Freedom

The Reproductive Health (RH) Bill has spawned so much controversy that it has become a very divisive issue in this supposedly predominantly Catholic country --- "Catholic" only because the majority have been baptized as Catholics. Unfortunately, it seems that many (or the majority) are catholics-in-name, cafeteria catholics, minimalists or just plain apostates ... unfortunately. A nice article can be read in Cafeteria Catholics For those who choose to practice and live the faith, the battle lines are drawn in the heated discussions on the RH Bill.

The latest issue is that of theology and academic freedom in the light of the CBCP's "complaint" against the administration of the Jesuit-run Ateneo de Manila University where more than 150 Professors wrote in defense for the passage of the RH Bill.  This is another test case of academic freedom versus the Magisterium.  A discussion on this issue can be found in Mariology and Academic Freedom.

I pray and wish that this controversy is put to an end and a final solution is reached... and that we discuss the issues with a lot of charity but with a view towards the Truth.
